Review -Courteney Hocking

Courteney Hocking provides something for everyone in her show ‘UnAustralian’.

She begins by sharing her time growing up in Nunawading (Koori for home of crime and boredom) before moving onto the pressing issues of Australian society such as why did Pauline Hanson last so long on Dancing with the Stars? And what are Dannii Minogue’s qualifications for judging channel 7’s new TV show ‘Australia’s Got Talent’?

The intimate venue of the Trades Hall Banner Room (‘the Tardis’) feels more like friends gathered round to ‘shoot the breeze’, which is no doubt enhanced by Courteney’s relaxed delivery.

I recommend paying Courteney a visit, if not simply to reminisce about times past, but also to brush up on current events and determine your own level of ‘Australianism’ and how far you’re willing to go for ‘mateship’?

Courteney’s fast paced, lively show crams information and on-liners ranging from the Mexican wave to Andrew Bolt’s most (in)famous columns. Courteney also takes a good hard look at Australian irony.

Although only 24 and in her second solo show, Courteney’s on stage presence is that of someone beyond her years. Her show is well researched, expertly delivered and funny to boot.

Political satire which covers Australian history and up to date issues provides running giggles throughout. Be sure to get there early to get the best seats in the back row – still close enough to the comedy, but also with the wall for back support.
